Curtis
Brittany (9), Zachary (8), Alex (6) & Haley (4)
Several days before Curtis was available for adoption, the phone was ringing at the adoption center and I happened to answer it. John called from his home in Victorville to inquire about his status. I explained when he would be available and to please bring his family and pets (dog/s) to the meet and greet. I also explained that there was a lot of interest in Curtis and that we would be taking applications on him.
The day Curtis was available the whole family came in to meet with him. When they walked in that morning I recognized the voice as soon as he said he would like to do a meet with Curtis. I did the adoption counseling and the first meeting with the family and Curtis. The meeting was wonderful for me personally. To have met such a kind and understanding family with four incredibly intelligent small children, they fully understood the importance of matching the dog with the perfect family. They all tried very hard not to get their hopes up too high, and understood that there may be a family out there who was a better match for Curtis. But they did indeed want what was best for the animal.
The family had quite obviously fallen for Curtis, and I was taken with the family!
In my opinion they were the perfect family, however with our policies we had to continue to accept applications.
I try not to bring my work home with me, but I could not stop thinking about them and how this truly is a "Perfect Match". So the next morning at work one of my co-workers told me a family had been chosen and called to adopt Curtis. I was rather sad thinking about the Richart family not getting Curtis, but they were in fact chosen. They were called that morning to come in to complete the adoption process, and as luck would have it I had just walked up front and there they were ready to fill out the necessary forms for adoption. I was so happy for them and the next thing I knew all of us had tears of joy streaming down our faces. I allowed Joy and the children to visit with Curtis while John was finalizing the adoption. When the paper work was completed john joined us in the meet and greet room, they brought their camera with them, so I offered to take a few pictures for them. Joy offered to email me the pictures that were taken that day so I gave her my email address and when I got it I had to share the pics with Barbara and Pam.
What has stuck with me regarding this adoption was that I was involved in every step from phone call to adoption personally, and to see the beautiful smiles on the faces of the entire family, reminds me why I love my job so much.
